As I noted in February when presenting the first items in this family, the “Babà” containers epitomise the entire category of Containers in an elegant, intelligent and appealing way. I consider this project to be of great interest as a design exercise: it is one that takes into account not just technique and production but the emotive feel of the objects, and then goes further, rethinking the classic functional categories into which household objects have been split. The shape is soft and enveloping but at the same time clearly defined. The first group of these containers, which are multi-use in the true sense of the term, was launched this spring: the same shape, as its size increases, turns from Flower Vase, to Bottle Cooler, Waste Paper Bin and Umbrella Holder. The size of “Babà Extralarge” makes it the largest object from one single disk of sheeting ever produced by Alessi. The second group, which we present here, derives from a modification of the same elements: given lids they become more easily identifiable object types: Bowl, small Waste Bin, large Stool/Laundry Basket.
