LA FABBRICA ESTETICA

Alessandro Mendini

This hook contains the results of a project devised and developed by Alessandro Mendini and carried out by Alessi spa within its “Tendentse” ceramics and porcelain department. Begun in 1989 and discussed with Alberto Alessi, Stefania Campatelli and Flavio Pannocchia, and with Laura Polinoro of the company’s Design Research Centre, the project concluded in February 1992 with the manufacture of 10,000 porcelain vases. The general project coordination was by Maria Christina Hamel and Dagmar Trinks; the product development by Campatelli and Pannocchia; and company coordination by Danilo Alliata. Research documentation on the one hundred decorators taking part in the project was collected by Federica Tondato and, in the company, by Ausilia Fortis and Carla Spezia. The critical selection of decorators was conducted in Africa and Asia in collaboration with André Magnin, Paris, in Scandinavia with Anniken Thue, Oslo, and Yriö Sotamaa, Helsinki. The transfers were produced by Decoritalia of Calenzano, and the vases were made by Seltmann of Weiden. The graphic design of this book was developed by Massimo Caiazzo and Fulvia Mendini in the Mendini atelier, with the assistance of Thomas Weltncr. The editorial work is by Dario Moretti with Beatrice Felis. The translations are by Rodney Stringer, those of the cantions and of the Alessi and Pirella articles are by Howard Rodger McLean, and that of André Magnin’s text is by Dario Moretti. The graphic elaboration of the decorations is by Claudia Mendini, Sara Rossi and Davide Sgalippa. The illustrations are by Claudia Mendini (itinerant exhibitions project and preparatory forms of the vase); Judith McKimm (the 100 vases); Nadia Morelli (final form of the vase). The computer images are by Eduardo Pla. The vase with fragments of decorations is by Massimo Caiazzo. The itinerant exhibitions design is by Piero Gaeta. The photographs are by Santi Caleca (picture taken at Villa Alessi, Monte Oro, on Lake Orta). Salvatore Licitra (photo of the 100 vases and picture taken in the home of Gilbert & George, London), Occhiomagico (gold vase, vase by Robert Venturi with flowers, “archeological” photo) and Studio Ombra (prototypes of vase). Special thanks to Paolo Farolfì, Gilbert & George, Josef Legat, Hans Math, Paolo Morando, Manfred Opitz, Francesca Pasquini, Dieter Rüger, Christian Seltmann.
